Mysterious drones have been spotted at night at airports across Europe. How worried should we be?
Mysterious drones have been spotted at night at airports across Europe. How worried should we be? First comes the warning, that disembodied voice over the tannoy: Your attention please. Please move to the shelter on the minus second floor. Then comes the mosquito-like whine of the incoming Russian drones, massing in their hundreds just above the clouds.

The Download: election tech fears, and AI for teachers
This year, close to half the world's population has the opportunity to participate in an election. The internet is full of doom-laden stories proclaiming that AI-generated deepfakes will mislead and influence voters, as well as enabling new forms of personalized and targeted political advertising. Though such claims are concerning, it is critical to look at the evidence. With a substantial number of this year's elections concluded, it is a good time to ask how accurate these assessments have been so far. The preliminary answer seems to be not very.

Yemen's Houthi Militia Says It Launched Missiles and Drones Toward Israel
Yemen's Houthi militia claimed an attempted attack on southern Israel on Tuesday, saying it had launched a "large batch" of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones toward Israeli targets. The Iran-backed militia carried out the attempted assault in response to what it called "brutal Israeli-American aggression" in Gaza, the Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, said on the social media platform X. Mr. Sarea said the attack was the third operation conducted by the Houthis "in support of our persecuted brothers in Palestine," and threatened further missile and drone assaults. The Times could not independently verify the Houthi claims. On Tuesday, the Israeli military said its aerial defense system had intercepted a surface-to-surface missile fired toward Israel "from the area of the Red Sea."

How Scientists Are Using AI to Help Protect the Oceans
You've seen the art AI image generators can create, and you may have played with natural language AI chatbots. You've benefited from artificial intelligence tools recommending you music and suggesting your next streaming show. But AI can do much more. Humans are excellent at spotting patterns. It's why we see faces on Mars or in the clouds.
